CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2023) – The Caltech Men's and Women's Swim & Dive teams faced the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Saturday morning amid beautifully sunny skies and cool temperatures.
The day began with Pomona-Pitzer's Senior Day festivities, honoring the Sagehens' numerous swimmers and divers competing in their final collegiate swim meet at Haldeman Pool. After the ceremony, the divers kicked off the competition with the women on the three-meter boards and the men on the one-meter. Once again, first-year
Jana Woo took first place in the high dive, earning 293.55 points and narrowly besting the next-best Sagehen diver. She later broke the 300 mark with a first-place, 309.60 score on the one-meter board as she continues to improve on her way to NCAA Regionals.

Katy Chu and
Katherine Pan also represented the Beavers on the diving boards and posted new personal best scores.

The 200-yard medley relay followed, with the women's group of
Natalie Lee,
Charlotte Zhang,
Mila Hong and
Madeliene Swint raced to a 1:57.64 finish, and the men's A-team of
Simon Hu,
Jason Lin,
Pierre Zeineddin and
Evan Zhang took second place in the event with a 1:35.91 time.
Leo Yang earned a big win for Caltech in the men's 1000-yard freestyle, blazing through his final 50 in 25.52 seconds for his fastest split of the race for a 9:42.62 first-place finish. Lee claimed second place in the women's 1000, finishing just shy of her personal record.
Just before the mid-meet break,
Evan Zhang won the men's 50-yard freestyle in 21.08 seconds, just a blink of an eye behind his own record.
Stepping up to cover an event he doesn't normally swim, Yang brought Caltech a win in the 200-yard backstroke with a lifetime-best 1:59.93 time. More first-place points for the Beavers came later as Zeineddin
touched first in the men's 100-yard butterfly after just 50.86 seconds.
Wrapping up the day was the 200-yard freestyle relay with the women's quartet of
Tara Leininger, Swint,
Brea Swartwood and Hong finished in 3:54.14, and the men's team of Yang,
Lucas Abounader,
Christopher Pukszta and
Evan Zhang posted the seventh-best time in Caltech history with a 3:07.68 finish.
"We fought hard against two top nationally-ranked teams today," Head Coach Andy Brabson said. "Even though we were a bit shorthanded, we battled well and we're in a good place as we head into our final prep before SCIAC Championships."
Brabson and the Beavers return home to Braun Pool for the Senior Day meet next Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10:30 a.m. against the University of La Verne.
