TEMPE, Ariz. — Seniors
Kyle McCandless and
Daniel Wen of Caltech Men's Tennis received Div. III National and Regional ranks,
the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced on Wednesday.
The rankings, determined by the ITA National Ranking Committee, are the first of the 2023-24 season.
The committee ranked McCandless 45th in the nation and 12th in the West Region after the talented player posted an incredible season this past spring. The star earned seven impressive singles victories last season, with one coming over a regionally ranked opponent – all while playing in the first position.
Most recently, the standout registered an exceptional performance at the ITA Div. III West Regional Championships this past September, where McCandless reached the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual tournament runner-up.
In the doubles rankings, the ITA named McCandless and Wen as the 20th-best doubles pairing in the nation and fifth in the region after the two performed excellently together last season.
Perhaps most notably, McCandless and Wen picked up 11 doubles wins in 2023 – one victory short of tying the program record in single-season doubles partnership wins. The pairing earned one phenomenal win over a regionally ranked pairing before going 5-2 against opponents in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
McCandless
earned First Team All-Conference honors at the conclusion of the campaign while Wen
received Second Team.
The seniors also performed excellently together at the ITA Div. III West Regional Championships this fall as they won three straight matches before falling in the semifinal round.
The two Beavers have played an integral part in the team's
recent success. In 2023, the two led the squad to a
No. 13 national ranking and a No. 3 regional ranking en route to a
5-2 conference record, earning the team
second place in the conference standings. The group went on to
win the SCIAC Tournament semis to reach the finals where they competed for the conference title, falling just one win short of qualifying for the NCAA Championship Tournament.
2023 served as the fourth straight full season in which Caltech Men's Tennis reached the semifinals of the conference championship tournament; it was also the fourth straight full year in which the program reached at least 11 victories.
In total, the group picked up nine victories over nationally ranked teams.
This year's team will kick off the official 2023-24 season on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2:30 p.m. as they take on Azusa Pacific University in a road matchup before hosting Concordia University Irvine for the Beavers' home opener on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 11:30 a.m.
