Three Beavers Named to Men’s Tennis All-Conference Teams

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. — Three student-athletes from the Caltech men's tennis team earned all-conference recognition last week for their excellent play this past season.

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) has announced that juniors Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) and Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) were named to First Team All-SCIAC, while junior Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson) was named to the Second Team.

This is the second consecutive year in which three Caltech players have been named to the Men's Tennis All-SCIAC teams. McCandless moved up to First Team this season after being named to Second Team last year; Kannan earned First Team honors for the second straight season.

In singles play, McCandless played the entire season at the first line, where he grabbed seven wins; he earned two impressive in-conference victories, including one over a regionally-ranked opponent. McCandless was ranked 12th in the West region in the latest ITA rankings.

Kannan also finished the year with seven singles wins, two of which came versus in-conference opponents. He too notched a victory against a regionally-ranked foe. Kannan was the 23rd-highest ranked singles player in the region as of last week's rankings.

Wen recorded a team-high 14 singles wins this season, just one shy of tying the all-time program record. He logged just four losses in 2023 and was a perfect 7-0 in conference play. Wen primarily played in the fourth spot this season, with one victory coming on Court 3.

In doubles, McCandless paired up with Wen for every match this season, where they picked up 11 total wins. The juniors went 5-2 in conference play, with the most notable win coming against the No. 2-ranked duo in the region. The pair finished the year with three wins in the first spot and eight in the second spot.

Kannan earned eight wins in doubles, most of which came with first-year Beaver Andrew Zabelo. The duo scored four wins in the first spot and three in the second; Kannan linked up with junior Andrei Staicu for one additional win on Court 3.

The team finished the season second in the conference standings after achieving a 5-2 record versus SCIAC teams. The group defeated Redlands 5-4 in a gritty semifinal matchup before losing to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the conference championship title.

The team ended the season ranked No. 4 in the region and No. 15 in the nation among DIII teams.

The group will take a well-deserved rest before returning to action this fall as they compete at ITA Regionals. Follow the team on Instagram @caltechmten and Caltech Athletics on Instagram and Twitter @caltechbeavers.
