Edwards Sets Flurry of Season Highs as Women’s Basketball Tests Oxy

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's basketball team faced off against the Occidental College Tigers on Saturday in a battle of two SCIAC foes.

The Beavers entered the matchup looking for a third straight victory after the squad posted a huge win over Pomona-Pitzer and another over Bethesda University in their past two contests.

Oxy earned the first points of the game though senior guard Milan Robinson (Anaheim, Calif. / Fairmont Prep) put the team on the board less than 90 seconds later as she finished a strong layup. Junior guard-forward Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) recorded the squad's second field goal a few moments later as junior guard Kodie Vondra (Livingston, Mont. / Park) found Edwards near the basket for a layup.

The two teams traded buckets as the first quarter continued; Robinson found junior guard Saumya Chauhan (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) with 28 seconds remaining to put the Beavers within three of the guests before the opening period expired.

Edwards opened the second period with a good jumper to put Caltech within a point, though the Tigers responded with some offense of their own to pull ahead. The Beavers, however, continued to hang around, as senior guard Hope Arnett (Torrance, Calif. / Chadwick School) connected on a jump shot off an assist from Edwards to bring Caltech within six.

The third quarter belonged to Oxy, though the Beavers put up a valiant effort in the fourth quarter as they scored a game-high 21 points. Despite the late barrage of points, it was not enough to overcome the visitors.

Caltech collected a season-high 43 rebounds in the contest to Occidental's 35. The Beavers tied their season-high in offensive rebounds (20) to the Tigers' 10.

The home team ended the night with 9 steals to their opponent's 6; they drained four 3-pointers to Oxy's two.

Edwards wrapped up the contest with a season-high in points (24), rebounds (13) and steals (four) in addition to tying her season-high in field goals made (10). The star led the game in all four categories. The junior also led all players in offensive boards (four) in addition to a team-high in 3-pointers, with two.

Robinson led the game in assists with three.

Head coach Annie Tarakchian and the squad will now turn their attention to the Kangaroos of Austin College (TX), who come to Braun Gym for a 1 p.m. showdown on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Come cheer on the team in person or follow along online at gocaltech.com/coverage.
