PASADENA, Calif – The Caltech men's tennis team extended its unbeaten streak through the fifth match of the season as the Beavers defeated the Blues of Whitman College 8-1 on a warm Saturday morning.
Huge wins came from the top two doubles pairings, first with
Andrew Zabelo and
Ishaan Kannan blazing through their set to an 8-1 score in #1 Doubles. While Whitman countered with a victory on Court 3, Caltech's #2 Doubles partnership of
Kyle McCandless and
Daniel Wen battled to an 8-6 victory and sent Caltech into the singles session with a 2-1 lead.
Then all six Beavers in the Singles lineup won their matchups, beginning with Wen's 6-2, 7-5 win in #4 Singles, followed very closely by doubles partner McCandless in #1 Singles, winning 6-3, 7-5.
Caltech just needed one more match point to win the day, but it would have to wait as the four remaining pairings all ended up with 1-1 match scores after their second sets. Kannan ultimately earned the clincher, rebounding after a second set defeat to claim his match with scores of 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3.
While
Victor Li and
Rishi Gundakaram on Courts 5 and 6 had already begun their third sets, Zabelo and his #3 Singles opponent had just finished a grind of two 7-6 sets. Zabelo won his first set with a 7-5 tiebreak score while conceding the second one 7-4. With the match already clinched for Caltech, the third singles pairing was decided by a 10-point "super set," and Zabelo prevailed 10-6.
Gundagaram rallied from a 7-5 first set loss to win his second set by a 7-6 (5) tally. He prevailed with a 7-5 score in the final set. And with just #5 singles left to finish, Li bounced back from a middle set defeat to complete the Beavers' singles sweep with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 score.
Head Coach
Matt Brisotti and the Beavers' next match is scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 3 p.m. against Bowdoin College.
