PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's and men's track & field teams hosted multiple in-conference opponents on Saturday in the Beavers' first only and only home meet of the season. Teams from Redlands, Cal Lutheran and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps joined Caltech for a day of track and field events.
Junior
Meg Robertson achieved Caltech history early in the meet during the women's hammer throw. The dual-sport athlete broke the Caltech record in the event in her second attempt, notching a massive 44.45m throw. Robertson's new record was 0.55m better than her previous personal best (43.90m) and is 0.17m longer than the previous school record (44.28m), set by Paige Logan in 2014. Robertson's second-best placement of the day came in the shot put, where she earned fourth (10.06m).
The Beavers saw also saw huge performances in the men's and women's 400 meters, with Caltech athletes winning both contests.
The men's 400 meter race was won by sophomore
Josh Saha, who crossed the line in first place with a time of 51.05 seconds. The New York native crushed his prior personal record set last season (51.48).
The women's 400m victory went to sophomore
Lily Randall, who broke the tape with a speedy time of 1:03.20
— just a few milliseconds off her personal best. The sprinter would go on to finish sixth overall in the 200m (27.99).
Junior
Joey Litvin had himself a monumental race in the men's 1500m, as he achieved a personal record of 4:00.61 and a fifth place finish overall among 22 runners.
First-year
Elisa Grillo led a pack of Beavers in the women's 1500m; the Texas native ran a blistering 5:03.85 to finish sixth out of 16. Following immediately behind Grillo was first-year
Gigi Pistilli (seventh, 5:04.24), sophomore
Sophie Dalfonzo (eighth, 5:04.49) and senior
Lauren Garriques (ninth, 5:09.85). Dalfonzo topped her personal record set in 2022; the other three Beavers competed in the event for the first time in their collegiate careers. Grillo would return later in the day to compete in the 800-meter race, where she earned sixth place overall with a time of 2:33.15.
The men's 400 hurdles saw sophomore
Cason Shepard earn second place overall, finishing in 59.66 seconds.
Two Beavers followed Robertson in the women's hammer throw to finish in the top ten: sophomores
Emily Hu (36.02m) and
Rucheng Pan (29.99m), both of whom notched PRs.
Men's thrower
Daniel Amelinez-Robles had himself another strong multi-event day in the throwing events; the sophomore's best placements came in the hammer throw (39.22m) and javelin throw (31.31m), where he finished fourth in each. First-year Beaver
Subham Sahoo was sixth in hammer, setting a personal best of 33.63m. Junior
Lucas Lanzendorf set a personal best in hammer (28.72) and tied his record in discus (27.87m).
The women's 4x100-meter relay team put in a very solid time in their first race as a group this season. The team
— made up of Randall, sophomore
Isabela Ceniceros, and first-years
Ashwitha Surahi and
Lauren Pryor — ran a time of 52.50 seconds, easily clearing Caltech's best result from last season (55.29).
In the final individual track event
— the men's 5000 meter race
— the Beavers entered four athletes, with sophomore
Thomas MacLean leading the way for the home team with a 16:51.54 finish. Junior
Jordan Ostby set a personal record with 17:56.97.
Both the women's and men's teams will look to build on their big performances on Saturday, Mar. 11, when they will compete at the Oxy Distance Carnival & Spring Break Classic at Occidental College. Events will begin at 9 a.m. Follow the Caltech track and field teams on Instagram @caltechxctf.
