CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Caltech track and field teams competed in their final SCIAC Mutli Dual Meet of 2023 on Saturday, picking up key points and significant personal records before they head to the SCIAC Championship Meet later this month. The Beavers faced off against teams from La Verne, Whittier and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the contest.
A number of Beavers moved up on the Caltech all-time top-ten lists in Saturday's competition, one of whom being senior
Lauren Garriques, who earned an impressive second place among 13 runners in the women's 1500-meter race. The Lake Forest, Illinois native crossed the line at 4:58.22, moving her up to seventh all-time on the Caltech record boards in the event. First-year
Elisa Grillo finished fourth in the race, clocking a time of 5:08.56.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior
Katy Chu grabbed second place in what was a close and competitive race. Just her first time racing the event, Chu's 12:28.28 puts her fifth all-time in the Caltech 30000m steeplechase record books.
The Beavers also recorded strong distance performances on the men's side, with sophomore
Rohun Agrawal posting an impressive time in the men's 5,000-meter race. The Cupertino native finished second place overall in the race after finishing with a time of 15:25.26, closing in a scorching 65 seconds in his final lap in what was a tactical race. Rohun's time puts him ninth all-time in the Caltech record books.
In the men's 1500m, sophomore
Jonathan Bennett earned a seventh-place finish among twenty competitors, crossing the line at 4:03.1
— a personal record.
It was a season's best 4x400m for the men's team, who placed first (3:31.13). Two of the four sprinters recorded season-best splits, with senior
Malik Paulino running his lap in 52.5 seconds and first-year
Aaban Syed running a 52.8.
The men's hammer throw saw five Beavers compete, with all five Beavers grabbing personal records. Junior
Ezra Johnson led the way, throwing a 38.10m throw for fifth place in the event. The throw put Johnson into the Caltech all-time top-ten list (eighth). Behind the junior were first-years
David Castillo (36.71m) and
Subham Sahoo (33.84m), as well as junior
Lucas Lanzendorf (31.20m) and sophomore
Jadon Hale (25.57m). Johnson would go on to place fifth in shot put (11.86m); Castillo set a personal best in the discus (29.57m).
Junior
Meg Robertson continued her phenomenal season in the field, earning points in hammer throw, shot put and discus. The thrower notched second place in hammer (43.13m), third in shot put (10.63m), and fourth in discus (32.02m).
Sophomore
Rucheng Pan also earned a slew of top-ten finishes; her 32.93m result in hammer throw earned her a personal record and fourth place overall. The sophomore currently sits at the no. 5 spot on the Caltech hammer throw record sheet. Pan also placed sixth in the shot put (9.43m), and ninth in the discus (25.95m, a personal record).
Senior
Julen Lujambio was fifth of eleven in the men's 800-meter race (2:01.24).
First-year
Elyes Serghine led the way for the Beavers in the men's 400-meters, finishing in fourth (51.79).
Sophomore
Lily Randall set a personal record in the 100 meters, finishing in 13.38 for tenth. Sophomore
Josh Saha was eighth in the men's race (11.49).
In the head-to-head matchups, the men's team topped the Whittier men, 63.00 to 53.00.
