LA VERNE, Calif. — The Caltech men's and women's track and field teams will head to La Verne University this weekend as they compete at the 2023 SCIAC Championship Meet. Action will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 29 and continue into the evening before picking back up Sunday, Apr. 30 at 10 a.m.
A number of Beavers from both the men's and women's teams will compete across both days as they try to grab personal records and team points.
One of the most intriguing races of the championships will come in the women's 10000-meter race, where sophomore
Sophie Dalfonzo will return to the event after breaking the program record earlier this month. Dalfonzo's historic time of 36:49.04 shattered her previous personal best of 38:10.84 set at last year's championships, where she earned a third-place finish.
The men's race should also see a top finish as junior
Joey Litvin vies to score a top placement as well as the school record. Litvin ran a personal-best 31:16.27 in March – just 1.94 seconds off from the program record. The Pennsylvania native finished seventh in the event at last year's championships.
Litvin will also be running in the 5000-meter race, where Litvin did earn the school record earlier in the month. His time of 14:37.51 is the fourth-fastest time among conference athletes this season. Litvin will join sophomore
Rohun Agrawal (15.25.26) and a slew of eight other Beavers competing in the event.
The women's 5000m will see Dalfonzo (18:00.00) return as she tries to break the school record in the event (17:50.10). The sophomore will run alongside first-year
Gigi Pistilli (18:12.37) among four total Beavers.
Junior
Meg Robertson will hope to continue her historic season in the field after setting the program record in hammer throw earlier this season. Robertson holds a 44.45m record in the event as she tries to top her own best mark. Sophomores
Emily Hu (36.02m) and
Rucheng Pan (32.93) will also compete in the event as they try to rise up in the all-time records. All three athletes will also compete in the shot put and discus events.
In men's hammer, sophomore
Daniel Amelinez-Robles (41.47m) and first-year
David Castillo (36.71) come in as the highest-seeded Beavers, while juniors
Ezra Johnson (12.23m) and
Lucas Lanzendorf (10.54m) lead the charge for the team in shot put. Johnson and Amelinez-Robles hold the highest seeds for the group in discus.
Another intriguing battle should occur in the women's 1500-meters, where Caltech has five athletes entered. Leading the charge for Caltech in the event this season is senior
Lauren Garriques, who holds the fastest seed time among the five Beavers competing. The Illinois native's personal record of 4:58.22 is the 11th fastest seed time among all athletes entered. Also racing in the event will be first-year
Elisa Grillo, who will hope to break the five-minute barrier in addition to scoring points for the team. Grillo holds a seed time of 5:03.85, which puts her 15th heading into the preliminaries.
The men's 1500m should also see some Beavers in the mix, as sophomore
Jonathan Bennett and junior
Kyle Piper hope to crack the finals. Bennett's best time of 4:03.10 puts him 13th among entries while Piper's 4:10.13 puts him 19th.
The top three times from each of the three heats as well as the next three best times among all heats will advance to the finals.
In the women's 3000m steeplechase, junior
Katy Chu holds the seventh seed after running a 12:28.28 earlier this season. The junior will hope to score big points for the team in what should be a competitive race.
The men's 400m hurdles sees two Beavers in the top-six entries, as sophomore
Josh Saha (54.92) and sophomore
Cason Shepard (57.02) attempt to grab spots on the podium.
The women's 100-meter dash will see three Caltech athletes competing. Sophomore
Lily Randall holds the best seed time among her teammates, with a personal best of 13.38. The men's race will be contested by sophomore
Roy Jiang (11.62).
First-year
Aaban Syed is seeded eighth in the men's pole vault (4.10m).
Senior
Julen Lujambio and first-year
Elyes Serghine will run in the men's 800-meter race, where the duo will attempt to break 2:00 minutes in the event this season.
Ashwitha Surabhi (27.86) will try to set a new personal record in the women's 200m; Jiang will do the same as he competes in the men's race.
The Beavers will compete in both the men's and women's 4x400m relay; the women will field a team in the 4x100m relay as well.
