PASADENA, Calif. — The men's and women's track & field teams traveled to the campus of Occidental College on Saturday where both squads competed in their second in-conference meet of the season. It was a massive day for multiple athletes, who recorded multiple personal bests and inched closer to school records.
Highlighting the meet was the performance of sophomore
Josh Saha, who grabbed the victory in the men's 400-meter hurdles race with a scorching time of 52.92 seconds. The time is the second-fastest in school history — just .08 seconds off from the record. Saha's time puts him 11th on the DIII Nationals qualifying list in the event.
Saha also competed in the 100-meter dash, where he finished tenth overall with a personal-best time of 11.42, before running a leg of the 4x400 meter relay in the final event of the afternoon.
Both the women's and men's 1500-meter events saw Beavers placing well in highly contested races.
Sophomore
Sophie Dalfonzo and senior
Lauren Garriques both notched personal records in the women's race, with both athletes breaking five minutes for the first time in their careers. Dalfonzo's 4:58.72 was good for ninth place among the 31 competitors while Garriques's 4:59.01 was good for tenth.
First-year
Gigi Pistilli placed right behind her teammates with a 12th place finish, recording a personal-record herself with a time of 5:00.54. Junior
Katy Chu finished 16th (5:13.77), while first-year
Elisa Grillo placed 18th (5:18.39).
Sophomore
Rohun Agrawal led the way for the Beavers in the men's race, placing 11th among 31 runners with a time of 4:04.60. He was followed moments later by fellow sophomore
Jonathan Bennett, who earned a personal record of 4:07.47 for 14th overall. Junior
Ryan Chan finished 19th (4:19.46) and sophomore
Miles Jones placed 20th (4:20.89).
In the men's throwing events, it was junior
Ezra Johnson who led the way for Caltech, recording a personal best result in his three events. The Beaver finished the day sixth in the discus (35.03m), seventh in the shotput (11.91m), and seventh in the hammer throw (36.26m).
Sophomore
Emily Hu placed sixth in the hammer throw (32.20m) and eighth in discus (26.62m). Fellow sophomore
Rucheng Pan was seventh in the hammer throw (27.87m) and eighth in shot put (9.28m).
In the pole vault, first-year
Aaban Syed notched a personal-record height, clearing the bar at 4.10 meters for fourth place overall.
Sophomore
Roy Jiang slipped into the top-ten in the men's 400 meter dash, crossing the line at 52.97 seconds.
The men's 800 meter race was led by senior
Julen Lujambio, who finished in 12th place with a time of 2:01.39. On the women's side, junior
Katy Chu recorded a time of 2:34.80 for thirteenth.
