Two Homers for Caltech vs. Cal Lutheran

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech baseball team hosted California Lutheran on Friday afternoon in the first of three games versus the Kingsmen this weekend.

After a scoreless first inning and a half, it was the Beavers who struck first in the contest. A ball put in play by right fielder Thorsen Kristufek would put the sophomore in scoring position, before the Texas native advanced to third base thanks to a ground ball put in play by first-year third baseman Mark Hu. A sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Garrett Knuf would push Kristufek to home, giving the Beavers the 1-0 advantage.

Cal Lutheran would respond with a run of their own in the third inning, but the Beavers would bounce right back in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff single to center field by sophomore catcher Edward Speer put a runner on base with senior center fielder Will Dembski next up at the plate. With the count 2-2, Dembski connected on his sixth home run of the season, rocketing a ball over the left field fence to put the Beavers up 3-1.

Cal Lutheran would respond with some runs of their own, but the home team was not finished scoring.

A ball put in play by designated hitter Leo Jenkins would put the junior on first base, before he later advanced to second after Dembski recorded a left field single. With two runners on, sophomore left fielder Jack Fishel would send a ball deep and over the fence, giving the Beavers three more runs. Fishel now sits at 17 total RBIs this season.

Caltech produced nine hits on the day, with Dembski, Jenkins, Fishel and Speer each having two. The team registered just one error.

The group will rest Friday night before heading out to the campus of Cal Lutheran where they will finish their series with a two-game Saturday doubleheader. Game 1 is scheduled for 11 a.m. with the second game estimated to begin at 2 p.m. Follow Caltech Athletics on Instagram @caltechbeavers.
