LA VERNE, Calif. — The men's and women's track & field teams competed at the SCIAC Track & Field Championship Meet this weekend as athletes from both teams scored big points and set personal bests, with one Beaver earning a school record.
It was the men's 10,000-meter race that was one for the history books, as junior
Joey Litvin broke the Caltech program record with a scorching time of 31:06.83. Litvin smashed the existing record of 31:14.34, which had stood for the past 49 years. The junior's time was good for third place at the championships.
Litvin would also compete in the 5,000-meter race, where he set the program record in the distance earlier this season. The star notched an 11th place finish with a time of 15:12.95 behind sophomore
Rohun Agrawal, who destroyed his existing personal record by over 32 seconds as he earned a seventh-place finish with a time of 14:52.41.
The monumental performances continued in the women's distance races as sophomore
Sophie Dalfonzo earned a pair of impressive top-two finishes. The New Jersey native recorded a time of 37:12.78 in the 10,000m on Saturday before returning for the 5,000m on Sunday, where she ran a personal-record time of 17:53.49. First-year
Gigi Pistilli was sixth in the race (18:22.11).
With her time in the 5K, Dalfonzo is now 3.4 seconds off from the all-time program record. She nabbed the school record in the 10K earlier this season.
Junior
Meg Robertson scored a pair of top-five finishes in two of the women's throwing events. Robertson scored a fourth-place finish in the discus (36.24m) and threw a personal-record distance in the shot put (10.95m), finishing fifth.
Senior
Lauren Garriques grabbed fifth place in the 1500m with a personal-record time of 4:45.27 to move into second all-time in the distance on the Caltech record boards. Garriques' time was a big jump from her previous record, 4:53.72, set one day earlier.
Sophomore
Cason Shepard went home with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles finals after achieving a personal-record 56.20 time in the preliminaries. Sophomore
Josh Saha registered the sixth-fastest time in the preliminaries, running a 56.31.
First-year
Aaban Syed set a substantial personal-record in the pole vault as he cleared a height of 4.41 meters to place sixth. The newcomer's record was just 1/100th of a meter shy of topping the school record.
The men's throwing events saw the Beavers score several high marks. Junior
Ezra Johnson earned seventh in the shot put, setting a personal-best throw of 12.50m; he would later return for the discus throw, where he was ninth (35.49m).
First-year
David Castillo set a personal-record in both hammer throw (37.49m) and shot put (11.01m) for 10th and 13th places, respectively. Sophomore
Daniel Amelinez-Robles was ninth in the hammer throw (28.01m).
Junior
Katy Chu earned 11th place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:48.81.
Senior
Julen Lujambio broke two minutes in the 800m, setting a personal-record 1:59.20 for 13th in the preliminaries. Sophomore
Jonathan Bennett set a PR in the 1500m, running a 4:06.66 to finish 15th overall in prelims.
Sophomore
Rucheng Pan's best finish was the hammer throw (13th; 32.72m). She set a personal best in the discus throw (26.23m).
With the conference season officially complete, both groups will recover before multiple athletes return to action for the Oxy Invitational this Saturday, May 6. The NCAA Outdoor National Championship will be held Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27.
