LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Several student-athletes from the men's and women's track & field teams will travel to the campus of Occidental College this Saturday as they compete at the 2023 Oxy Invitational. For the majority of Beavers competing, the meet will likely serve as the final opportunity to top their personal-best marks this season.
One particular competitor to watch is sophomore
Sophie Dalfonzo, who earned the silver medal in both the 5000-meter and 10000-meter race last weekend at the SCIAC Championship Meet.
This Saturday will see Dalfonzo competing in the 5K, where she will attempt to break the all-time program record. The sophomore ran a personal-best time of 17:53.49 in the event last weekend -- just 3.4 seconds off from the record, set in 2019 by Claire Hu.
Dalfonzo smashed the 10K record earlier in the season (36:59.04).
In the field, first-year
Aaban Syed will attempt to make history in the men's pole vault after clearing a personal-best height of 4.41 meters last weekend to place sixth at the SCIAC Championships. Syed's height put him within 1/100th of a meter of the program record, set in 1992 by Greg Dudey.
The men's 1500-meter race will see two other athletes worth watching, as sophomores
Rohun Agrawal and
Jonathan Bennett try to top their personal records and make their marks on the Caltech all-time top-ten lists. Agrawal holds a personal-best time of 4:00.83, good for eighth all-time in program history and 0.22 seconds behind teammate
Joey Litvin. Bennett sits just a few seconds outside the top-ten with a personal-best of 4:03.1 (h).
Also competing for the Beavers will be sophomore
Thomas MacLean, sophomore
Miles Jones and junior
Ryan Chan, all of whom will be looking for big times in the men's 5000-meters. MacClean holds the fastest time among the three with a personal record of 15:55.39.
Field events are scheduled to begin at noon while running events will begin at 2 p.m. The full schedule and other meet information can be found
