TEMPE, Ariz. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the NCAA Div. III Regional and National Year-End Rankings on Friday, with the Caltech women's tennis team coming in at No. 5 in the region and No. 22 in the nation. The team's regional ranking ties their highest finish in program history, set in 2022.
In March, the group surged to 16th in the nation, marking their highest ranking in program history.
The team finished the year with nine wins and recorded a 4-3 record versus SCIAC opponents, tying for the conference's third-best record. The group ends the year as the third-highest ranked SCIAC team, behind CMS and Pomona-Pitzer.
Individually, junior
Emily Zhang finishes the year at the No. 11 singles spot in the West region and at the No. 38 singles position in the country. Zhang posted nine impressive wins in the first line this season, three of which came when facing regionally-ranked opponents. The Massachusetts native played a critical role in the team's win over No. 17 Washington University (Mo.) — with the team score tied at 4-4, the star grinded out a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1 victory to give the Beavers the win.
Behind Zhang in the rankings came sophomore
Yoyo Benchetrit, who the committee ranked 20th in regional singles play. Playing nearly every match at the second line, Benchetrit posted a phenomenal 11-3 overall record, going 4-1 versus conference foes. Among many impressive victories include Benchetrit's 6-2, 6-2 win in the Beavers' 5-4 victory over No. 30 Vassar, and her 6-3, 6-2 win to help the Beavers over WashU.
The Toronto native earned All-SCIAC Second Team honors in May for her exceptional play in conference action.
The team will now prepare for ITA Regional play this fall before returning to team matches in 2024.
