LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. — The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) awarded three Caltech student-athletes Athlete of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday.
Senior
Hope Arnett (Torrance, Calif. / Chadwick School) of women's basketball, junior
Evan Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Thomas Jefferson) of men's swim & dive and sophomore
Jana Woo (Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) of women's swim & dive each received the distinction in their respective sports for their excellent performances during the week of Jan. 1 through Jan. 7.
Arnett earned
Women's Basketball Defensive Athlete of the Week while Zhang notched
Men's Swimmer of the Week and Woo attained
Women's Diver of the Week.
Arnett recorded an impressive double-double with 16 points and an incredible 10 steals, helping Women's Basketball to a
monumental 73-62 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The senior added four assists and eight rebounds while hitting four of seven 3-point attempts. It was the squad's second straight win and fourth victory in five games.
Zhang helped the men's swim & dive team to a double-dual meet victory as the Beavers
topped Cal Lutheran, 156-124 and the University of Redlands, 179-105, with Zhang winning three events and getting narrowly out-touched in a fourth. Zhang took the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.38 to win by almost a full second before his strong final 50 yards fell just short as runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke. Zhang provided the biggest separating splits in both the 200 Medley and Free Relays to help his relay group nab wins in both events.
Woo played a massive role as the women's swim & dive team
scored a dominant win over Redlands, 199-97. The star diver picked up a huge win on the 3-meter board and finished a close second in the 1-meter competition. Woo won the 3m by nearly 30 points with a score of 297.50 and was just 12.3 behind on the 1m (283.55) while also making a scoring appearance in the 200 Free Relay. The talented athlete scored the school records in both diving heights in 2022.
