Women’s Basketball Battles Cal Lutheran in Saturday Showdown

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Caltech women's basketball team faced off against the Cal Lutheran University Regals on Saturday in a late afternoon clash on the road.

Action tipped off just after 4 p.m. and it was the Beavers who earned the first bucket of the game, as senior guard Milan Robinson (Anaheim, Calif. / Fairmont Prep) splashed a 3-pointer after junior guard-forward Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Araphoe) found her behind the arc.

Caltech soon went up 8-4 as Edwards connected on a good jumper before senior guard Hope Arnett (Torrance, Calif. / Chadwick School) found senior forward Claire Perhach (Carlsbad, Calif. / Sage Creek), who drained a good shot from distance.

The Regals responded with a few nice buckets of their own, though the visiting Beavers continued to move the ball around effectively to create points on their end of the court. A nice assist from Arnett to junior guard Kodie Vondra (Livingston, Mont. / Park) near the hoop for a layup put Caltech back on top at 12-10 with 3:52 remaining in the opening quarter.

Cal Lutheran eventually re-took the lead, winning the second quarter and carrying the lead into halftime. This did not dismay the Beavers, however, who registered their best offensive and defensive quarter in the third period as Caltech scored 19 points to the Regals' 10.

Vondra scored the first points of the second half by route of a long ball after Edwards found her behind the line. A few possessions later, it was Arnett doing the distributing as she found Vondra who quickly splashed her second made shot from distance.

Their next trip down the court, Arnett again found the sharpshooting Vondra, who drained her third straight 3-pointer of the quarter to electrify the Caltech bench. The Montana native continued her scorching quarter a few minutes later as she finished for a layup.

With under a minute to go in the third quarter, Robinson — who won the SCIAC Women's Basketball Defensive Athlete of the Week award on Tuesday — turned good defensive into good offense as she stole the ball from the Regals in the backcourt before quickly finishing for a layup of her own.

The Beavers forced a turnover on the following Cal Lutheran possession before Vondra stole the ball on the subsequent one; this allowed Caltech to hold for the final shot of the period. With just a few seconds remaining, Edwards drove into the paint before kicking the ball back out to Arnett, who drained a good 3-pointer from the top of the arc.

Edwards posted her strongest offensive outing of the game in the fourth quarter, putting up 10 points across the period's 10 minutes, though it was not enough to get ahead of the hosts as time expired.

Vondra recorded a season-high five steals in the contest — just one shy of her career high, also achieved against Cal Lutheran. She and Edwards tied for the team-high in points, with each player putting up 17.

Arnett led the squad in rebounds (seven) and assists (five), tying the game-high in the latter.

Caltech put their excellent defense on display as they forced the Regals into their worst turnover performance of the season; the hosts reached 24 turnovers with 14 of them coming via steals by the Beavers.

The Institute scored 18 points off turnovers and eight points in the fastbreak; they made eight free throws to Cal Lutheran's two.

Head coach Annie Tarakchian and the group will now focus on the University of La Verne, who come to Pasadena on Wednesday, Jan. 24 for a 7 p.m. matchup. Cheer on the team in person or follow along online at gocaltech.com/coverage.
