CLAREMONT, Calif. — Junior
Rohun Agrawal and senior
Meg Robertson made history on Saturday as the two Beavers nabbed school records at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet.
It was the first true full-team meet of the season for Caltech Track & Field, who saw a number of high places, program top-ten results and several personal bests against high-level talent across Divisions I, II and III.
Agrawal (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) cemented his name in the history books as he took on the men's 3,000-meters. The star posted a lightning performance in the seven-and-a-half-lap race, crossing the line at 8 minutes and 29.88 seconds to destroy the longstanding record of 8:36.54 set in 1974. The distance specialist beat out a number of Div. I athletes to place third overall amongst 69 total runners.
Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) competed in the women's discus throw where she threw an incredible distance of 38.08 meters (124' 11") in her third attempt to break the program record. The talented dual-athlete topped the previous record from 1994 by about .08 meters (~3 inches) to place second among all 22 competitors.
It was not the only strong performance for Robertson, who recorded a banner day after achieving two more top-five finishes earlier in the meet. The thrower first took part in the hammer throw competition, placing fifth out of 16 student-athletes with a 38.91m (127' 8") throw; she later placed fifth among 23 in the shot put with an impressive throw of 10.57m (34' 8.25").
Another notable result for the Beavers came out of the field as first-year
Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Tex. / W.B. Ray) placed second among ten athletes in just his first collegiate high jump competition. The rookie cleared a height of 1.90m (6' 2.75") to earn runner-up and put himself fifth all-time on the program record board for the event.
A group of Caltech athletes competed in the men's hammer throw, with junior
Jadon Hale (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) leading the way. The Beaver demolished his previous best throw of 28.27m (92' 9") with a massive throw of 40.01m (131' 3") – an incredible personal record of about 38-and-a-feet to finish fifth overall. With the result, the junior moves to eighth all-time on the hammer throw school record boards.
Sophomore
David Castillo (Johns Creek, Ga. / Chattahoochee) finished just behind Hale with a personal-best throw himself. The second-year produced a 39.49m (129' 7") performance in his final attempt to finish seventh and put his name ninth all-time on Caltech's hammer throw record boards.
The Beavers also saw a strong performance from first-year
Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga), who finished tenth out of 35 in the women's 200-meter dash with a collegiate-best time of 27.39 seconds. With the time, Goswami earns the No. 6 all-time spot on the women's 200m school leaderboards.
The women's 400-meter race saw first-year
Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) run a speedy 1:03.31 to place fourth and beat out several athletes from Division I in the process. With the time, the rookie earned the No. 8 all-time spot on the program leaderboards for the event.
Another fourth-place finish came in the men's 400m race, where
Roy Jiang (Vancouver, B.C. / Southridge) took fourth among 23 athletes; the sprinter ran a personal-record 51.22 seconds.
Caltech also saw a top-ten finish from junior
Sophie Dalfonzo (Fairhaven, N.J. / Biotechnology & Rumson-Fair Regional), who competed in the women's 3K against 33 other athletes. The program's all-time 5K and 10K record-holder posted a quick time of 10:51.54 to nab tenth overall and fifth among Div. III competitors.
Junior
Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) placed fourth out of 23 in the men's discus throw with a personal-best throw of 40.15m (131' 9") in his first attempt; the standout also competed in the men's shot put, where another first-attempt mark of 12.65m (41' 6") gave him his best result of the event and eventually seventh place out of 23.
In the men's 3K, juniors
Miles Jones (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) and
Jonathan Bennett (Englewood, Colo. / Kent Denver) followed Agrawal with quick times of 8:54.74 (16th) and 8:58.16 (21st), respectively. With the result, Jones moves up to tenth all-time in program history for the distance.
The men and women will continue their training with many Beavers participating in the Rossi Relays, as hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, this Saturday, Feb. 24. Action begins at 9:30 a.m.
