Arora, Benchetrit Go 2-for-2 as Caltech Women's Tennis Tops Pacific

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's tennis team defeated the Pacific University (Ore.) Boxers on Monday in a nonconference clash.

"As March and non-conference matches conclude, it was an exciting match to see new on-court leaders emerge," Head Coach Benay Weintraub said. "We remained focused and energized from the first serve to the last match tiebreaker."

Action began with doubles where the Beavers took two out of the three matches. First-year Anna Tanaka (Honolulu / IMG Academy) linked up with senior Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) on Court 3 to nab the swift 8-2 victory before juniors Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) and Yoyo Benchetrit (Toronto, Can. / St. Clemens) secured the 8-4 win on Court 2 a few minutes later.

Caltech earned its third match point in rapid time as junior Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) posted a perfect 6-0, 6-0 performance in sixth singles.

Sophomore Anna Szczuka (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Scotch-Plains Fanwood) put in a strong showing herself as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win in fifth singles. With the result, Szcuka improves to 4-0 in singles play this season and 11-2 for her career.

The Beavers clinched the team match on Court 3 as Benchetrit picked up her second win of the day with a final set score of 6-0, 6-1 for the clinch. As doubles partners playing singles on adjacent courts, Arora soon picked up the 6-3, 6-1 win on Court 4.

On Court 1, Zhang forced a talented opponent who ranked 12th in the nation last November into a third-set tiebreak, narrowly falling 6-4, 2-6, 0-1 (6-10). First-year Hannah Ramsperger (Zürich / Realgymnasium Rämibühl Zürich) took six games from the 32nd ranked player in the nation in last fall's poll.

"The team keeps learning and growing from every match," Coach Weintraub said. "This drive will continue to positively impact us now and in the future."

The Beavers will be right back at it tomorrow to host MIT at 3:00 p.m.
