LA VERNE, Calif. — The men's and women's track & field teams competed in the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet #3 on Saturday, which served as the final interconference competition before the groups take on the conference championship meet later this month. It was an impressive day for the Beavers, who competed against the University of La Verne, Cal Lutheran University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
One of the most notable showings came from senior
Meg Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall), who posted a remarkable day as she earned first place in three different events. The thrower won shot put with a throw of 10.04m (32' 11.25"), discus with a result of 33.79m (110' 10") and hammer throw with a mark of 43.62m (143'1").
Rookie
Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) posted a notable finish as she won the women's 400m with a blazing time of 1:01.65 to just beat out the next-fastest finisher by .02 seconds. With the time, the first-year tops her previous personal best of 1:02.01. Goswami's name currently sits sixth all-time in program 400m history; she missed out on the No. 5 spot by .20 seconds.
Another significant showing came out of the women's 1500m, where junior
Sophie Elam (Medford, Ore. / North Medford) broke the tape with a quick time of 5:05.55. Elam beat out 13 other competitors to nab the victory in the only heat.
Stunningly, it was the first 1500m of the standout's career; Elam primarily competes in the 800m and 400m distances.
The Caltech men went 1-2-3 in the men's 400m hurdles, with junior
Josh Saha (Rye, N.Y. / Hackley School) picking up the victory with a time of 55.45 seconds. Junior
Cason Shepard (Vancouver, Wash. / Union HS) finished second (58.21) while rookie
Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Texas / W.B. Ray) earned third (58.28, PR).
In the women's 100m, first-year
Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) placed third out of 12 in what was the rookie's first 100m dash of her collegiate career; Brainard crossed the line at 13.28 seconds to launch herself to No. 3 all-time in program history for the event.
The sprinter also competed in the women's 200m, where she picked up another third place -- this time out of 18 competitors. Brainard ran a personal-record 27.28 seconds; she sits at No. 5 all-time in the program record boards for the event.
Junior
Jadon Hale (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) finished first in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 38.63m (126' 9") throw in his second attempt; sophomore
David Castillo (Johns Creek, Ga. / Chattahoochee) was third with a result of 35.81m (117'6") while sophomore
Subham Sahoo (Moon Township, India / Moon Area) was fourth (35.33m; 115' 11").
Senior
Katy Chu (Los Gatos, Calif. / Saint Francis) finished second in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a massive personal record of 12:06.55. Chu's previous best was 12:28.28; her name currently sits at No. 5 all-time in program history for the event.
First-year
Louise Marie Choi-Schattle (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) just barely missed out on the victory in the women's 800m; the talented runner ran 2:27.86, just missing out on first by .23 seconds.
Gatewood placed third in the men's high jump after clearing a height of 1.85m (6' ¾"); first-year
Colin Gray (High Point, N.C. / Early College at Guilford) earned third in the men's javelin throw with a result of 36.42m (119' 6").
Caltech went 2-3 in the men's shot put with junior
Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) securing runner-up (12.76m; 41' 10 ½") and Castillo earning bronze (11.08m; 36' 4 ¼").
Junior
Emily Hu (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House) was third in women's hammer (37.78m; 123' 11"); sophomore
Sidd Shendrikar (Los Angeles / New Roads School) was fourth in the long jump with a PR of 5.82m (19' 1 ¼").
In the head-to-head team score, the Caltech women scored 39 points to beat out La Verne (17 pts); the men tied Cal Lutheran with 25 points.
The women's and men's track & field teams will now devote full focus to the SCIAC Championships in Claremont later this month. Action begins on Saturday, Apr. 27 and concludes on Sunday, Apr. 28. Stay tuned to gocaltech.com for more information.
