Caltech Track & Field Shines at Pomona-Pitzer Invite

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Caltech women's and men's track & field teams competed against athletes from Divisions I, II and III and others on Saturday as the squads took on the large-scale Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. It was a strong showing from the Beavers, who posted several program top-10 performances in the field and on the track.

One of the most notable results of the day came out of the women's hammer throw, where junior Emily Hu (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House) posted a massive mark of 42.07 meters (138' 0"), destroying her previous personal best by four full meters, or about 13 feet and 1 inch. The junior placed fourth overall and finished runner-up among Div. III athletes; she currently sits No. 3 all-time in the program record books for the event.

The Beavers also saw a high-level performance in the men's shot put competition as senior Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) posted a program top-10 mark. The Beaver came away with a personal-best throw of 13.98m (45' 10.5") to skyrocket up to No. 6 all-time in school history. Johnson finished seventh overall out of 34 competitors; he placed fourth among athletes not from Div. I or II.

Johnson additionally took part in the discus throw where he finished first among Div. III athletes and seventh overall. The standout posted a mark of 40.18m (131' 10").

Rookie Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) posted an excellent showing as she ran the 200-meter dash for the first time in her collegiate career and subsequently put her name at No. 5 all-time in program history. The first-year crossed the line at 27.35 seconds and finished ahead of 27 other sprinters. Earlier this season, Brainard earned a spot on the program's all-time top-10 list in the 400m distance.

Fellow first-year Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) took part in the women's 400-meters, where she posted a brilliantly-timed race to finish in 1:02.01, skyrocketing her up to No. 6 all-time in the program record book for the distance. It was Goswami's first open 400m after competing in the relay throughout the season.

Sophomore Gigi Pistilli (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) put herself in a program top-10 list as well after breaking five minutes in the women's 1500m. The star ran a 4:59.39 to earn the No. 10 spot all-time; she finished 18th out of 76 athletes. Junior Sophie Dalfonzo (Fair Haven, N.J. / Biotechnology & Rumson-Fair Regional) soon followed at 5:05.02 for 26th.

In the women's 800-meters, junior Sophie Elam (Medford, Ore. North Medford) ran a personal record 2:27.86, just missing out on a program top-10 time.

Senior Meg Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) earned ninth place in the women's discus (35.31m; 115' 10"), 14th in hammer (39.16m; 128' 6") and 16th in shot put (10.16m; 33' 4").

Junior Roy Jiang (Vancouver, B.C. / Southridge School) set an impressive personal record in the men's 200-meter race, where he finished 36th out of 79 with a time of 22.75 seconds.

In the men's 400-meter race, rookie Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Tex. / W.B. Ray) finished 20th out of 39 after crossing the line at 51.76 seconds.

Junior Josh Saha (Rye, N.Y. / Hackley School) placed ninth among the 15 runners in the men's 400-meter hurdles (58.05). Sophomore Aaban Syed (Laurel, Md. / North County) earned ninth in the 23-athlete men's pole vault competition, clearing a height of 4.05 meters (13' 3.5").

In the men's hammer throw, junior Jadon Hale (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) posted a mark of 37.21m (122' 1") to finish 15th overall and fourth among Div. III athletes. First-year Colin Gray (Greensboro, N.C. / Early College at Guilford) placed 16th out of 33 with a new personal best in the men's javelin (40.17m; 131' 9").

Junior Miles Jones (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) led the way for the group in the men's 1500m, crossing the line at 4:08.62 for a new personal record. Senior Ryan Chan (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) and junior Thomas MacLean (Redding, Calif. Shasta) finished back-to-back in the men's 5000m with a pair of sub-16 times. Chan ran 66 seconds in his final 400m to earn a personal-record 15:57.94 and 20th place out of 47; MacLean finished moments later at 15:59.69 for 21st.
