Patel Picks Up Seventh Singles Win as Women’s Tennis Battles Pomona-Pitzer

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's tennis team headed east on Saturday morning as they competed against the No. 2 Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in an interconference dual match.

Junior Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) continued her strong season as she produced an impressive victory in fifth singles. The standout took the first set 6-3 before falling 3-6 in the second, resulting in a deciding superset tiebreaker. There, the junior found herself in a massive 0-5 hole before storming back to an incredible 11-9 victory to win the match.

With the win, Patel moves to a team-high seven wins on the season; the Beaver is now 7-3 this year and 2-0 when facing conference opponents.

First-year Hannah Ramsperger (Zürich / Realgymnasium Rämibühl Zürich) competed in a high-level clash in a second singles match also went into a deciding superset tiebreaker. The rookie took the opening set 6-3 before dropping the second 3-6; she fell in the tiebreaker, 6-10.

Junior Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) won six games in third singles; sophomore Anna Szczuka (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Scotch-Plains Fanwood) won five in the fourth position.

The Beavers will now return home for a duel against the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, who last ranked No. 1 among all Div. III squads in the nation. The two teams clash in Pasadena this Wednesday, Apr. 10 with action beginning at 7 p.m. Cheer on the Beavers in person and follow along online at gocaltech.com/coverage.
