McCandless, Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne, Wen Earn All-SCIAC Honors

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. — Three members of the Caltech men's tennis team received 2024 All-Conference recognition, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced on Wednesday.

Senior Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) won First Team All-SCIAC while first-year Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne (Paris / Lycée Jean de La Fontaine) and senior Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson HS for Science & Technology) nabbed Second Team honors. This is the third consecutive year in which three Caltech players were named to an All-SCIAC team.

This is the third straight season in which McCandless has been named to an All-SCIAC team and the second straight year in which he received First Team recognition. McCandless now graduates with All-Conference honors in every season he contested; the star missed out on a freshman season in 2021 as Caltech did not compete due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Entering the Beavers' final matchup, McCandless ranked No. 9 in the region and 42nd nationally for singles; he posted a 5-2 record in conference play. The senior finishes 2024 with nine singles wins, including two over nationally-ranked opponents and one over a regionally-ranked one — all from either the first or second position.

In doubles action, McCandless and Wen played nearly match alongside each other; together the duo finished the spring with a team-high 11 wins (four vs. SCIAC) as part of an impressive 11-5 record. The pair ranked No. 3 in the region and No. 20 in the nation entering their final match.

McCandless concludes his career with 27 singles wins and 31 doubles wins; the latter puts him fifth all-time in Caltech Men's Tennis history, achieved in just his three seasons of play.

Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne receives the all-conference nod in just his first collegiate campaign; he is one of just four first-years to make an All-SCIAC team this season. The rookie – who most recently ranked No. 8 in the region and No. 39 in the nation for singles – ended 2024 with a win over a player who at the time ranked No. 8 in the region and 41st in the nation.

The Paris native finishes the year with a team-high 15 singles wins to tie the program record for singles wins in one season. The standout led the Beavers with a team-best record of 15-3 (5-2 SCIAC).

Wen picks up his second straight Second Team award after logging an impressive final campaign. The senior, who ranked 16th in the region in singles entering his last match, wraps up the year with an 11-5 singles record and on an impressive hot streak as he took 10 of his final 12 matches.

The veteran finishes his career in the program history books across multiple categories; perhaps most notably, he put his name second all-time for career singles wins, with 37. The accomplished star also cemented his name in the doubles record books, tying for second all-time in single-season doubles wins (12, this season) and tying for second all-time in career doubles wins (32). Like McCandless, these totals were achieved in just three seasons of play as Caltech did not compete in athletics in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this season, the Beavers earned a national ranking as high as No. 20 and a regional ranking as high as No. 4 (DIII). They finish the year as the fourth-highest ranked SCIAC squad.

The group will take a well-deserved offseason before returning to ITA Regionals play in the fall.
