PASADENA, Calif. - Caltech hosted the SCIAC Quad Cup #1 Saturday, a day highlighted by outstanding performances on the track and in the multitude of events, with cool temperatures and occasional sun providing great conditions for competition.
Starting things off strong, reigning SCIAC high jump champion
Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Tex. / W.B. Ray) dominated the high jump, clearing 2.00 meters to defeat 10 competitors. The sophomore currently holds
the top mark in NCAA Division III so far in this young season, with several weeks ahead to raise the bar even higher. Gatewood was named SCIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his efforts at the Quad Cup #1.
Daniel Amelinez-Robles (Madison, Wis. / Vel Phillips Memorial) shattered the Caltech school record in the men's hammer throw, launching a 49.74-meter throw to win by 1.68 meters. His mark eclipsed the previous record (48.22m, Morgan Hill, 2016) and ranks fourth nationally in NCAA Division III. His performance was the best out of the 19 athletes competing in the men's hammer throw event. Amelinez-Robles also placed third in discus (40.17m) among 23 athletes.
Caltech's women's 1500-meter squad shined with three top-five finishers: First-year
Katelyn Sadorf (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River) finished 3rd with a time of 4:59.41, senior
Sophia Elam (Medford, Ore. / North Medford) finished 4th with a time of 5:00.65, and junior
Gigi Pistilli (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) rounded out the top five finishing with a 5:03.17 time.
Emily Hu (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House) triumphed in the women's hammer throw (41.82m), defeating 10 competitors, while teammate
Clara Stevens claimed third (34.50m).
Luke Lamitina (Pittsburgh, Penn. / Winchester Thurston) earned second in men's javelin (47.94m) among 19 athletes.
SCIAC Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Year
Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills) showcased her versatility, placing fifth in shot put (9.54m) and third in discus (31.97m).
Other standout performances included:
- Hypatia Hamkins (New York / The Brearley School): 3rd in women's 800m (2:23.53) out of 15 runners.
- Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day): 10th in women's 200m (27.29) among 20 sprinters.
- Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga): 7th in women's 400m (1:01.63).
- Roy Jiang (Vancouver, B.C. / Southridge School): 8th in men's 200m (23.26) out of 24 competitors.
- Miles Jones (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo): 4th in men's 1500m (4:04.24), leading two more Caltech runners, Rohun Agrawal (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) and Stephen Goehringer (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley), into the top 10.
- Jacob Wolmer (Tenafly, N.J. Tenafly): 5th in men's 5000m (15:48.20) among 18 athletes.
- Brendan Rudberg: 5th in men's pole vault (4.05m).
- Siddhartha Shendrikar (Los Angeles / New Roads School): 5th in men's long jump (5.93m).
- Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy): 5th in men's shot put (12.44m) out of 19 throwers.
Caltech finished third overall in the team standings, capping a day of historic achievements and multi-event excellence. Next for Head Coach
