Caltech Track and Field saw multiple personal bests and notable performances at the SCIAC Quad Cup on March 7 in Claremont, Calif.
On the men's side, the Beavers raised eyebrows in the middle and long distances. Sophomore Stephen Goehringer (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) won the 3000-meter steeplechase outright with a time of 9:40.39. First-year Earnest Ting (Brookings, S.D. / Brookings High School) placed second overall in the 800-meter with a personal-best time of 2:00.59. First-year Alexander Reece (Applied Physics Short Hills, N.J. / Pingry) placed fourth in that race with a time of 2:01.62.
Caltech had four runners place in the top six of the men's 1500-meter race. First-year Ezra Caspary (Portland, Ore. / Roosevelt High School) placed third with a personal-best time of 4:09.72. Sophomore Aditya Pakal (The Woodlands, Texas / The John Cooper School) scored four points in the event, finishing fourth with a time of 4:10.27. Senior Sean Corman (Waterford, Conn. / Waterford High School / Worcester Polytechnic Institute) achieved his personal best, finishing in 4:11.39 in fifth place. First-year Cleatus Oaks (Point Pleasant, N.J. / Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science) placed sixth with a personal-best time of 4:12.24.
Senior Jacob Wolmer (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) placed third in the men's 5000-meter securing six points with his personal-best 15:38.66 time.
Sophomore Brady Akau (Kapolei, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) junior Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Texas / W.B. Ray), first-year Isaac Thompson (New Castle, Colo. / Coal Ridge High School) and first-year Alexander Reece (Short Hills, N.J. / Pingry) combined to finish second in the 4x400 relay with a combined time of 3:28.21.
Caltech's men also achieved notable results in the field events. Gatewood placed second in high jump clearing 1.93 meters while senior Aaban Syed (Laurel, Md. / North County) placed third in pole vault clearing 4.40 meters.
The Beavers demonstrated their strength in the throwing events as sophomore Maxwell Braithwaite (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) won the Hammer throw with a 49.07m toss and placed second in discus with a 38.31-meter throw. Senior Luke Lamitina (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Winchester Thurston) placed thrid in the hammer throw with a 45.70-meter toss. Lamitina won the Javelin competition with a throw of 63.38 meters.
On the women's side, Caltech did well in the relays. Junior Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day), sophomore Hypatia Hampkins (New York, N.Y. / The Brearley School), first-year Danielle Yang (Bloomington, Ind. / Bloomington High School South) and junior Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) combined to finish second overall in the 4x400 meter relay. Junior Aurelia Kuester (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) Goswami, Yang and Brainard combined to finish fourth overall in the 4x100 meter relay.
Goswami finished fourth overall in the women's 400 meters with a time of 1:01.64
Sophomore Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills) demonstrated her prowess in the throwing events, placing second in Discus with a 36.98-meter toss and fourth in Hammer with a 35.51-meter toss.
Caltech travels to Birmingham for the NCAA DIII Indoor Championships Friday, March 13.
