Caltech Track and Field Claims Multiple Medals at SCIAC Championships

Beavers set three program records.

Caltech Track & Field broke three program records and earned five medals at the SCIAC Track & Field Championships at Occidental College April 26-27.  

The Caltech women claimed four of the five Beaver medals and broke a program record for the most total points earned at the all-conference meet.

First-year Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills) set a Caltech women's discus program record (39.10m), ultimately finishing in second place in the event.  

On the men's side, Caltech broke a program record in the pole vault. First-year Brendan Rudberg (Shoreline, Wash. / Shorecrest) finished fourth overall, clearing 4.42m. Junior teammate Aaban Syed (Laurel, Md. / North County) cleared the same distance and finished fifth. 

The Beavers won two medals in the women's 10K. Junior Gigi Pistilli, (Portola, Valley, Calif. / Woodside) earned second place, setting a personal best (37:17.70) in the process. Senior Sophia Dalfonzo (Fair Haven, N.J. / Biotechnology & Rumson-Fair Regional) grabbed third place (37:23.68). 

Caltech's other podium finishes came in the throwing events. Senior Emily Hu (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House) earned third place in the women's hammer throw. Her 43.92m was a new personal best and sits at No. 3 all-time in Caltech Women's Track & Field history. Phaychanpheng also set her personal best in the hammer throw (37.70m), finishing sixth in that event. Junior Clara Stevens (Vienna / Flint Hill School) set a new personal high mark of 37.44m, finishing 7th.

Hu was also awarded the Jennifer Stary Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to a senior student-athlete who best exemplifies the conference's high ideals including ability, leadership, determination, sportsmanship and sincerity of academic pursuit. An astrophysics and computer science major, Hu has maintained a 4.0 GPA and her breadth of research experience spans four astrophysics projects and includes a role on the NASA Lunar Trailblazer operations team.

In the men's hammer throw, five Beavers placed in the top-10 finishers, and three finished in the top 5 as the crew hauled 18 points in the event.  Daniel Amelinez-Robles (Madison, Wis. / James Madison) finished on the podium, earning third place with his 49.43m throw. Senior Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio. / Columbus Academy) threw a personal-best 44.97m to place fourth overall.  first-year Maxwell Braithwaite (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) set his second personal best of the day (44.53m), and finished fifth.  Junior Luke Lamitina (Pittsburgh, Penn. / Winchester Thurston) found his personal best (43.21m) and came in seventh place. 

Elsewhere in the track events, Sophie Elam (Medford, Ore. / North Medford) set a personal best (4:47.24) in the 1500m, finishing eighth.  On the mid-distance side, first-year Katelyn Sadorf (Boca Raton, Fla. /Spanish River) finished 7th in the 800m final. She set a personal best (2:20.08) in her preliminary heat.  

Caltech set a season-best (4:11.34) and finished 7th in the women's 4x100m relay. Sophomore Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day), senior Lily Randall (Astoria, Ore. Astoria), Sadorf and sophomore Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) combined to achieve the feat.  

On the men's side, the Beavers achieved no fewer the seven personal bests. Three of those came in the distance events. Junior Jacob Wolmer (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) set his personal best in the 10k (31:50.70), finishing in sixth place. Senior Thomas MacLean (Redding, Calif. / Shasta) ran the event in 32:03.77, his best-ever, for eighth place. 

Senior Miles Jones (Sand Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernado) gave the Beavers another top-10 finish in a distance event, finishing sixth (14:51.48) in the 5,000m race. In the 3,000m steeplechase, first-year Stephen Goehringer (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) ran a personal best (9:31.14) to finish seventh overall.  

Amelinez-Robles placed fourth in the discus with his mark of 42.06m. Braithwaite placed ninth in discus with his second personal best of the day (28.62m). Lamitina found success in the javelin, throwing 53.50m for a fourth-place finish. Johnson finished fifth overall in shotput, throwing the shot 13.51m.

Head Coach Kelli Blake and the Beavers continue to press forward with competitors representing Caltech at the Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine on Friday, followed by the Oxy Invitational back at Occidental College on Saturday.
