Box Score PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Women's Tennis extended its win streak to three matches Saturday morning in a 5-2 victory over Colorado College.
The three Caltech doubles pairs combined to sweep the visiting Tigers. First-years Polaris Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J. / The Pennington School) and Aoi Kunimoto (San Diego / Rancho Bernardo) struck first in a clinical 6-1 win on Court 3, followed by rookie Carissa Gerung (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) and senior Anika Arora (Fremont, CA / Mission San Jose) on Court 1 with a 6-2 score to clinch the Doubles point for the Beavers. Sophomore Hannah Ramsperger (Zürich / Realgymnasium Rämibühl Zürich) and senior Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) overcame a late tie to win their #2 Doubles match by a 7-5 margin.
In the singles competition, senior Yoyo Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) was the first to finish her match, catching fire after a 6-4 first-set win to claim her second set 6-0. Gerung was the next to finish her match, she won in two sets with scores of 6-3 and 7-5 to bring Caltech within one point of clinching.
The deciding match point came on Court 6 as Hayes picked up her first collegiate singles win in a nearly-unblemished 6-0, 6-2 triumph to secure the team victory for the Beavers.
Rounding out the successes, Patel finished off her #2 Singles opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
"I am really proud of the focus and competitiveness we have shown so far this season," Head Coach Nyssa Peele said. "It's been a tough week mentally with the weather and cancellations, and not knowing when we were going to play, but when we finally got out there, we were locked in and beat a very good Colorado College team."
Peele and the women's tennis squad will face off against Whitman College this Thursday on the Caltech Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
