WHITTIER, Calif. – The Caltech men's and women's track & field teams showed out at the SCIAC Quad Cup Final on a hot Sunday morning and afternoon in their final conference meet before May's SCIAC Championships. The Beavers squared off against competitors from Cal Lutheran University, University of La Verne, University of Redlands and hosts Whittier College.
Men's Highlights
Sophomore
Brady Akau (Kapolei, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) took first place in the men's 400 meters, finishing in a personal-best 50.71 seconds.
First-year
Rafael Castro (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / Hackley School) earned first place points for the Beavers with a 10:11.74 finish in the men's 3000 steeplechase.
Senior
Jacob Wolmer (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) won the men's 5K with a 15:45.37 time, followed closely by junior
Ryan Fortin (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) at 15:49.41. Track temperatures exceeded 90 degrees at race time.
Junior
Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Texas / W.B. Ray) won the high jump event, clearing 1.97 meters for 10 team points.
Senior
Aaban Syed (Laurel, Md. / North County) won the men's pole vault, clearing the bar at a height of 4.40 meters on his first attempt. Sophomore teammate
Brendan Rudberg (Shoreline, Wash. / Shorecrest) took third in the event with a 4.25-meter mark.
And senior
Luke Lamitina continued breaking his own records in the men's javelin throw, winning the event with a 67.57-meter throw, almost 23 meters longer than the second-place thrower. Lamitina also took second in the hammer throw, hurling it 47.53 meters.
Women's Highlights
Sophomore
Hypatia Hamkins (New York, N.Y. / The Brearley School) took first place in the women's 800 meters with a 2:23.15 finish time.
First-year
Danielle Yang (Bloomington, Ind. / Bloomington High School South) won the 400 hurdles in 1:15.04.
Junior
Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) placed second in the women's 400 meters, crossing the finish line at 1:00.82.
The 4x400 relay team of junior
Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day), Goswami, Yang and Hamkins took second place with a 4:17.44 time.
Sophomore thrower
Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills) added 14 points for the team with her second place mark in discus (33.42m) and third place hammer throw personal best performance (39.20m).
Senior
Sophia Steven (Broomfield, Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter) earned third place points for Caltech in shot put with a 10.32m mark.
The Beavers head to the Moorpark College Invitational next, with events starting on Friday, April 3 at 10 a.m.
