Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. – Caltech Men's Soccer claimed a huge SCIAC victory on the road Saturday night, taking down the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags by a 5-1 score.
The win was Caltech's first over CMS in over 20 years and saw junior
Matthew Luk ( (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) become the all-time Caltech leader in career assists (17) before even reaching his senior season. Luk also netted a hat trick in the game in a performance that helped earn him SCIAC Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week honors.Â
Â
Despite falling behind early, the Beavers quickly answered back, as it was junior
Sam Mullen (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) who scored in the 21st minute, with an assist from senior
Ethan Feng (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) to tie the game. Before the end of the first half Luk scored what ended up being the game winning goal on a penalty kick in the 41st minute after drawing the penalty himself. Luk's 10 goals are the second most in the conference this season and his 26 points on the year pace all SCIAC players.Â
Â
In the second half, Luk kept the scoring going, beating multiple defenders, as he netted another one, with a helpful assist from Mullen in the 61st minute. Mullen himself continued the scoring parade as he received a pass from Luk in the box, and netted his second of the day in the 68th minute, finishing his day with two goals and an assist. The pass from Luk was his 17th assist of his career, breaking a Caltech program record.Â
Â
Nearing the end of the match, Luk was able to complete his hat trick, as he scored his third goal of the night from just past midfield, over the head of the goalie in the 86th minute, with an assist credited to sophomore
Aritz Schube Barriola (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / Rye Neck). Luk finished his day with three goals and an assist, and put up six of Caltech's 11 shots on goal.
Â
Seniors
Ethan Hamel (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) and
Alex Crowley (Atlanta, Ga. / Paideia) combined for eight saves on the day, with Hamel getting credited for the victory.
