Box Score 2 Caltech Women's Tennis played two duels in under 24 hours in punishing heat Thursday and Friday, hosting No. 36 Colorado College Thursday afternoon and Smith College Friday morning.
Against Colorado College, sophomore Maya Kessman (Fayetteville, Ark. / Haas Hall Academy) and junior Hannah Ramsperger (Zürich / Realgymnasium Rämibühl Zürich) made short work of their doubles match winning 6-2. On Friday, the two once again emerged victorious, winning 6-4 against Smith College.
In the singles portion of the day against Colorado College, Kessman outlasted her opponent on court 6. After winning the first set 6-3, she breezed through the remainder of the match dropping only three more games on the way to her second victory of the day. She won yet again on Friday morning, dismantling her opponent, 6-0, 6-0 on court six against Smith College.
Sophomore Aoi Kunimoto ( San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) kept her strong season going while also getting stronger throughout the match. Hers was the first court to finish in singles against Colorado College as she won, 6-4, 6-2. Kunimoto emerged undefeated on the weekend as she dominated the final two sets of a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory on Friday.
Kessman is undefeated in singles this year with a 5-0 record. Kunimoto is 5-1 in singles matches this season.
Sophomore Carissa Gerung (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) showed her endurance with a long but successful couple of days on the singles courts. Against Colorado College she played a three-set match with a tiebreak in the first and third sets. Gerung won the third-set tiebreak, 7-3, for the 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 victory. Her match on Friday against Smith was also a three-set affair, but she handled the challenge to the tune of a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Caltech remains home to face Linfield March 23 at 3:30 p.m. at the Caltech tennis courts in Pasadena, Calif.
