PASADENA, Calif. – Jorge Martinez netted two goals in
leading Cal Lutheran to a 6-3 victory over Caltech Wednesday
afternoon in SCIAC soccer action at Caltech's North Field.
Caltech opened the scoring when Kumni Jeje found the upper left
portion of the net from 16 yards out in the third minute. The
Kingsmen responded with three unanswered goals to finish the half.
Ivan Sanchez knotted the score at 1-1 with an unassisted effort
from 25 yards out that just dipped beneath the cross bar in the
11th minute.
Martinez scored both of his goals in the opening frame with his
first coming off an Alex Santana assist in the 17th minute. His
second goal came with 32 seconds left before halftime with a blast
from 10 yards out that gave the Kingsmen (2-8-2, 2-6-1) a 3-1
advantage after the opening stanza.
The Beavers fought back with a goal in the 64th minute when Dongjin Seo took
a Tyler
Hannasch corner kick in midair with his right foot. However,
Cal Lutheran responded just over four minutes later when Santana
blasted a right footed shot past Beaver goalie Marcus Lucas.
An undaunted Beaver attack got to within 4-3 when Alex Wein
corralled a Mitchel Arene pass
from 25 yards out and blasted the ball just under the cross bar for
a goal in the 74th minute.
However, Eddie Gonzalez and Josh Hibbert ended any hopes of
a Caltech comeback with goals in the 84th and 85th minute
respectively to seal the victory for the visitors.
The six goals scored by the Kingsmen and three for the Beavers
were season highs for both squads.
