Early Goals Aid Whittier's Victory Over Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – Whittier scored early goals in both the first and second half en route to a 3-0 win over Caltech in men's SCIAC soccer action at Caltech's North Field.

Thomas Barber put the Poets on the board 3:03 into the contest when he took a pass from the left side from Patricio Carregha and tucked a shot inside the right post. Neither squad was able to find the back of the net for the rest of the half.

Whittier (8-6-1, 6-4-1, SCIAC) found the back of the net for their second goal in the 47th minute as Francis Maxwell put home a header directly off a Adolfo Santos corner kick. Maxwell added an insurance goal in the 69th minute when his shot barely bounced over the goal line off a Srdan Jovanovic pass during a scramble five yards in front of the net.

Marcus Lucas posted several big saves to keep Caltech (1-12, 1-10 SCIAC) in the contest. For the afternoon the sophomore tallied 10 total saves.

David Diaz got the win in goal on a rainy, cool and overcast afternoon by making four saves.

The Poets posted a 20-8 edge in total shots while Caltech held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
