Box Score The road was less than kind to the Beavers on Thursday as they
traveled to Ducey Gym at Claremont Mudd Scripps. Off to what
initially looked to be a solid start, the Beavers lost focus and
crumbled into themselves to give the Athenas a win in SCIAC. The
opening minutes showed great promise, with the Beavers finding the
first bucket, running their offense and handling the press. Cutting
through the press like a knife through butter, Tech was able to
force CMS to ease up and fall back into the half court and it
looked briefly like Tech had a shot to stay in the game.
But CMS had a much different picture painted in their minds, and
started picking apart the dam the Beavers though they were
building. It started with Aria Krumweide of CMS going to work from
the perimeter. Hitting big shots early, Krumweide put the Beavers
on theirs heels and Tech's inclination toward turnovers helped
cinch the deal. Spoiled possession left Tech without the baskets at
critical momentum points.
Tech shot a solid 31% from the floor in the first half, but the
rest at halftime just wasn't enough to rejuvenate their reserves.
Without Krissy Dahl who was sidelined by the 17:00 mark of period
two with three fouls, the much bigger CMS team went to work in the
paint with their posts. With Kurmweide causing havoc on the
outside, the posts were able to move freely on the inside and
establish position over and over.
Tech desperately tried to match their play, but the fast feet of
Lisa Yee, normally the back up to Dahl, were busy on the perimeter
with Krumweide. To make matters worse, forward Teri Juarez nursed
an injury that required her to take a less active defensive
assignment, so the bumping and banging in the middle was left to
frosh Sarah Wright and sophomore Hoi Yee Nam, both guards by
nature. That left the middle exposed, and CMS went right for the
Tech underbelly.
The second half saw Tech connecting only 15% of the time. The
drought continued both at the line and outside. The Beavers were
unable to hit a shot from downtown and were a dismal 47% at the
line. In contrast, CMS was hot of hand, hitting 52% from the floor
and shooting an amazing 81% from both three point land and the free
throw line.
Despite fouling out, Krissy Dahl was Tech's leading scorer with
8 points. Lisa Yee led the effort on the boards with 7
rebounds.
Next up, the Beavers host the Occidental Tigers in the annual PINK
ZONE contest at Braun Gym on 2/13, tip-off is set for 5pm.
GO TECH!!!
