Opening night was bright and promising for the Beavers in the
pool. The upcoming women's water polo season is looking up if
tonight's face off against the Golden Knights of Gannon is a
jumping off point. With only days of practice under their suits,
the Beavers took to the water with determination in their teeth.
Tech took on Gannon University, an NCAA Division II institution in
Erie, Pennsylvania. Gannon, happy to be out of the snow go to work
early, scoring in the first minutes of the game. Caltech swam hard
and moved the ball doing their best to produce solid shots and work
the Gannon goalie. Eventually, their persistence paid off, and the
Beavers managed to put the ball to the goal for three points on the
board. Unfortunately, Gannon was able to poke it past the Tech
goalie 17 times.
Despite the lopsided score, Tech is still optimistic. A year
ago, Tech wasn't able to score or put up any fight in the first
competition of the year. So progress may be the victory for
tonight, but the Beavers celebrated it nonetheless. Goalie Panna
Felsen was able to post three saves with her efforts protecting the
cage. Frosh Hannah Dodd led the charge with a goal and two assists.
Erin Hoops and Chao Liu both scored on goals as well.
Caltech is back in action again in Braun Pool on March 11th.
Look for great improvement as the team will have significantly more
time in the pool before game two. The ball drops at 5pm as Tech
takes on visiting Cougars of Chatham Univeristy (PA).
GO TECH!!!
