The Lady
Beavers Water Polo Team was back in action Wednesday night for a
SCIAC fixture with the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, and despite another
strong showing in the half-court on both ends of the tank, the
counter-attack did in the Beavers. Isso Shimomoto led all scorers
with four goals for the Sagehens, who consistently found themselves
in 3 on 2, 2 on 1, and 1 on None situations. The first quarter
resembled a swim meet, as poor ball control on the offensive end
led to a flurry of counter-attacks by Pomona as six different
Sagehens got into the scorebook early. The Beaver offense settled
down in the second quarter which led to a pair of good scoring
chances for the Beavers, who finally cashed in just before the half
on a direct shot by Erin Hoops from a tight angle.
The second
half saw all sixteen Beavers play, and two more found the back of
the net. First year Center Hanna Dodd scored her 38th goal of the
season in the third period, and added another in the fourth. First
Year Carly Bond also scored, scooping up a rebound and firing it
high-corner as if she had been doing it all her life. It was, in
fact, her first career water polo goal.
On the
defensive end, Grad-Student and Captain, Goalkeeper Panna Felson
continues to impress, knocking down seven shots to go along with a
steal, while Peggy Allen finished with a team high four
takeaways.
Despite
yet another poor showing on the 6 on 5 (0/6), the Beavers remain
optomistic of future success. "At this stage we are working on
swimming and defense, and still drawing almost seven kick-outs a
game. We are starting to understand where the ball needs to be, and
the offense will eventually take care of itself, said Coach Moser
(2nd year). "We need to execute the six-on-five, but if we continue
to swim and work hard, we will continue to have solid looks at the
cage, and thats all you can ask for. Eventually they'll start going
in."
The Beavers are set
to face Cal Lutheran Saturday morning in Thousand Oaks at 11 am in
another SCIAC battle in the pool. The ladies then return to
friendlier waters next Wednesday when they host Redlands at
7PM.
