Strong Effort Falls Short for Women's Water Polo

The Caltech Women's Water Polo team was back in action on Saturday, losing a tight game  9-5 at Las Flores Park in La Verne.

ULV's senior day got off to a great start, with lone graduate-to-be Catherine Tehuitzil opening up the scoring, though First Year Hanna Dodd equalized off the post from a tight angle, and the first frame ended deadlocked at one apiece.

The Beavers briefly led 3-2 in the second period thanks to a second score from Dodd and a goal by Sophomore Erin Hoops on an extra-man opportunity, but Diane Aguayo's second goal of the quarter tied the match for a third time heading into the break.

De La Rosa scored 2 of her three third quarter goals in less than 2-minutes, while Aguayo added a third and it looked like the Leopards were going to pull away. Hoops had other ideas, however, as a third quarter brace brought the Beavers to 6-5 with under a minute to play, but De La Rosa connected for a third time in the quarter to stretch the lead to 7-5 only seconds after Hoops' strike.

The fourth quarter saw a furious push by the Beavers, drawing two exclusions and a penalty shot due to the strengthof Dodd and the speed of Sophomore Sprinter Caitlin Regan, but all three opportunities were left wanting, and Aguayo's fourth and Liz Roberts lone strike of the morning finished off the scoring.

Grad-Student Captain Panna Felsen was the story of the game in the loss. She blocked more shots (10) than goals allowed, and led all players with six steals. Without her stellar play, the game may have gotten out of hand early. The loss means the Beavers will finish the SCIAC head-to-head play in 8th place, and will play top seeded Pomona-Pitzer or Occidental in round one of the SCIAC Tourney next weekend.
