Late Goal Gives La Verne Victory

LA VERNE, Calif. – A goal in the last four minutes of the contest lifted La Verne past Caltech on Saturday evening in a SCIAC men's soccer match-up.

The win lifts the Leopards record to 2-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in SCIAC contests. Caltech falls to 1-7 and 1-5 respectively.

In the opening 45 minutes of the contest neither team found the back of the net. The home squad tallied a 16-4 edge in total shots but only three of them went on goal where Wesley Swank was up to the challenge. All of the Beavers shot were on goal but Jonathyn Lomeli saved them all for the Leopards.

The game's first goal came in the 49th minute when Ryan Estrada scored an unassisted goal when dribbled by Swank in the box and put the ball in the net. The Beavers knotted the score with just over 12 minutes left in the game when Mitchel Arene took a feed from Marec Serlin and beat Lomeli with a strike from 20 yards out.

Hector Lepe scored the game winner in the 87th minute when he headed home a Joshua Hill feed.

Caltech posted a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks while the Leopards tallied a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.

The game was played at Damien High School because La Verne's outdoor athletic facilities are undergoing renovations.
