Box Score PASADENA, Calif. – Whittier scored two goals in each half as they notched a 4-0 win over Caltech on Wednesday afternoon in a SCIAC men's soccer match-up at Caltech's North Field.
The win ups the Poets record to 5-7 overall and 5-4 in league play while Caltech falls to 1-11 and 1-7 respectively.
Whittier scored their first goal in the 19th minute when Kevin Hartsough scored on a free kick from 30 yards out. His shot just went past the out reached hands of Caltech goalie Wesley Swank and off the cross bar into the net.
The Poets second tally of the first frame came in the 29th minute when Sam Russell headed home a bouncing ball of a Joshua Dredge corner kick. The Beavers had a chance to pull within one but Alex Runkel's strike from 25 yards out just before halftime went wide left.
The visitors put their third goal on the board when Lucas Depinna blasted a ball in the back of the net from 15 yards out after a scrum in the middle of the box. Whittier tallied its final goal from a Gregorio Giogo shot from eight yards out in the 79th minute.
Whittier posted an 8-3 edge in shots on goal while creating five corner kick opportunities compared to none for the home squad.
Taylor Ayres earned the shutout in goal for the Poets.
