Box Score PASADENA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran used late striking goals in each half to post a 4-0 victory over Caltech on Saturday afternoon in a SCIAC men's soccer match at Caltech's North Field.
The Kingsmen win exacts a measure of revenge after Caltech handed them a 2-1 loss in late September.
Caltech's first scoring chance from in close resulted in a wide shot from Alex Runkel just before the midway point of the frame. Cal Lutheran (2-12, 2-7 SCIAC) put the game's first goal on the board in the 38th minute when Enrique Zaragoza headed home a Raul Yepez corner kick. Less than a minute the Beavers Young Min Kim put a shot on goal but Rey Rivera-Ramos made the save to preserve the Kingsmen lead.
The visitors put early pressure on the Beavers (1-12, 1-8 SCIAC) defense to start the second frame. Yepez's bid for a second goal missed when he hit the post in the 52nd minute. Caltech pressed back and nearly put home goals off corner kicks by Rongxiao Zhang in the 59th and 60th minutes.
Cal Lutheran put the tightly played contest away with goals less than three minutes apart. Ivan Sanchez made the score 2-0 in the 75th minute when he headed in a Zaragoza centering feed. Josh Hibbert all but put the game away when he scored on a penalty shot in the 78th minute. The final tally of the afternoon came when Luis Santana took a nice feed from Tyler Pascoe off a Yepez corner kick.
Rivera-Ramos made three saves in goal to earn the shutout.
