La Verne, Vanguard Top Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. -- Caltech dropped a pair of women's water polo matches Saturday afternoon at the Braun Pool.

The Beavers fell to La Verne 23-4 in a SCIAC match early in the afternoon before falling to Vanguard 12-9 in a non-conference tilt.

After a tight opening eight minutes the Leopards held a 4-2 lead before exploding for seven goals in the second period as they took an 11-3 edge at the halftime horn.

La Verne continued its offensive push by scoring eight more goals in the third perod. The tacked on four more goals in the final period to finish their scoring output.

Brittany Orduno and Anjuli Palos De La Rosa each scored four goals to lead the Leopards scoring efforts.

Caltech got a pair of goals from Caitlin Regan and a goal each from Janis Intoy and Erin Hoops during their first SCIAC match-up of the season.

Vanguard 12, Caltech 9

A steady Vanguard effort was just enough to push by the Beavers. The Lions scored three goals each in all four periods en route to the victory.

Vanguard scored four of the game's first five goals as they grabbed a 4-1 lead midway through the second period. Hanna Dodd brought Caltech within two with 3:09 left in the period but Vanguard responded with a goal on their next possession to build their lead back to three at 5-2. The teams traded goals as the Lions took a 6-3 lead at halftime.

The Lions scored three of the next four goals in the contest as they took a 9-4 with 3:22 left in the third period. Caltech fought back with three unanswered goals to bring their deficit to 9-7 with 6:59 remaining in the game.

An Ektaa Nijjar goal pushed the Vanguard lead to 10-7, however Karen Dowling's goal with 5:27 left brought the Caltech dis-advantage back down to two goals. However, Caltech couldn't draw any closer down the stretch.

The Beavers got a hat trick from Dowling who led all Caltech goal scorers. Dodd and Caitlin Regan each scored two goals while Janis Intoy and Peggy Allen rounded out the scorers for the Beavers.
