Beavers Compete at SCIAC Championships

LA VERNE, Calif. -- The Caltech women's water polo team closed the season out this weekend at the SCIAC Championships hosted by La Verne at Los Flores Park.

The three-day event includes all eight teams from the conference.

Friday, April 29 - #1 Occidental 24, Caltech 4 (Scoresheet)

The top ranked team in the nation scored the first seven goals of the game en route to the win. Caltech got their first goal from Caitlin Regan with 3:14 left in the first quarter. The Tigers scored one more opening quarter goal in taking an 8-1 lead after the first eight minutes.

Occidental's offense continued as they outscored the eighth seeded Beavers 7-0 in the second quarter. The Tigers upped their lead to 18-1 before Regan's second goal of the game with 3:15 left in the third quarter.

The final eight minutes saw the Tigers outscore Caltech 4-2 as Peggy Allen found the back and Stacey Levine scored her first goal of the season in the final quarter.

Saturday, April 30 - #5 Whittier 17, Caltech 3 (Scoresheet)

Whittier, the nation's fifth ranked team, jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back in posting the 17-3 victory.

Caltech fought back in the second quarter. Trailing 7-0, the Beavers got back-to-back goals from Caitlin Regan and Hanna Dodd to bring their deficit down to five. However, Whittier scored the final goal of the frame as they went into halftime with an 8-2 advantage

The fifth seeded Poets put any hopes of a Beaver second-half comeback away by outscoring Caltech 6-0 in the third quarter. Whittier went onto post a 3-1 scoring edge in the final eight minutes of action.

In addition to the goals score by Regan and Dodd, Erin Hoops found the back of the net in the fourth period to round out the scorers for Caltech.

Kati Peters made nine saves in goal.

Alexandria Talley recorded a hat trick to pace the Whittier offensive charge.

Sunday, May 1 - #9 La Verne 13, Caltech 5 (Scoresheet)

The Beavers played a solid second half but it was enough to overcome a eight-goal halftime deficit as La Verne posted the win.

Caltech held the Leopards offense to three first quarter goals but couldn't find the back of the net. The La Verne offense built their lead to 6-0 before the Beavers got on the board with a Hanna Dodd goal with 6:20 left in the second quarter. However, the Leopards scored three unanswered goals in taking a 9-1 lead at halftime.

The second half was played even through out. The Leopards, ranked ninth nationally, posted a 3-2 scoring edge in the third quarter but in the final quarter of the season the Beavers recorded an 2-1 scoring advantage.

Dodd scored two goals to pace the Beavers offense. Peggy Allen, Erin Hoops and Caitlin Regan rounded out the scorers for Caltech.

Kati Peters blocked seven shots in goal for the Beavers.

La Verne got hat tricks from Bethie Ross and Anjuli Palos de la Rosa in the win.
