LA VERNE, Calif. -- The La Verne women's water polo squad jumped out early and never looked back in posting a 12-5 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon.
The Leopards scored the only four goals in the opening period in jumping out to the lead. The Beavers got on the board when Janis Intoy found the back of the net for the opening goal of the second period. Erin Hoops brought the Caltech deficit down to 4-2 with 1:42 left until the intermission. However, the home squad scored two goals in the final minute of the stanza to grab momentum after the first half.
La Verne stretched their lead in the third period by posting a 3-0 scoring edge. Trailing 10-2 entering the final period, Caltech put their third goal on the board when Joy Lu found the back of the with 6:35 left until the final buzzer.
However, the seven goal spread was as close as the Beavers would get as La Verne tallied two consecutive goals to put any hopes of a comeback away.
In addition to Intoy's, Hoops', and Lu's goal scoring efforts, Carly Bond and Hanna also found the back of the cage.
Bethie Ross had a six goal performance to pace the La Verne offense.
The Beavers will enter next weekend's SCIAC Championships as the No. 8 seed and will face top seeded Pomona-Pitzer. The event is hosted by Whittier College.
