Stingy Defense Nearly Leads Beavers Past Redlands

Box Score

REDLANDS, CA— Caltech repeatedly thwarted numerous efforts by the University of Redlands men's soccer but couldn't pull off the upset, falling 1-0 on Wednesday evening.

Just over 48 hours removed from playing 15th ranked ClaremontMuddScripps in their SCIAC opener, the Beavers faced pre-season No. 9 team in the country.

In the opening half the defending conference regular season champions repeatedly tested the Caltech defense. The Bulldogs blasted 20 total shots, with five on them on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net. Paolo Bertolotti worked himself free in the 31st minutes for Caltech's lone shot on goal in the first half but Andreas Silva made the save as the two teams went into the locker room scoreless.

Will Walker put the game's only goal on the board in the 82nd minute when he took Redlands 33rd shot of the game. Evan Keny-Guyer and Matej Kustura assisted on the game winner.

Alex Wein had a shot with less than two minutes left in regulation go wide.

Redlands, just a year removed from advancing to the NCAA Championships round of 16, posted a 33-3 edge in overall shots while holding a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Caltech goalie Wesley Swank made eight saves in his 18th consecutive start for the Beavers.
