PASADENA, CA - Penn State-Behrend scored two goals in the final period that proved to be the difference in their 6-5 win over Caltech.
Things started well for Caltech as they scored the first two goals on the game. Soumya Kannan and Shalini Majumdar put the home team in front after the first frame.
Penn-State Behrend scored the first two goals of the second quarter. Goals by Mary Causgrove and Brittany Pinter knotted the score at 2-2. With four ticks left in the stanza, Emily Shih found the back of the net as the Beavers took a one-goal lead at intermission.
The Nittany Lions started the scoring in the third quarter with a Pinter net finder but Kannan scored her second goal of the contest to put Caltech right back in front. With 27 seconds left in the third quarter a Breanne Martinez scored tied it back up at 4-4. On the Beavers final possession of the quarter, Monisha Dilip scored with one second left as the home team took a 5-4 lead into the final period.
Caltech was kept off the scoreboard in the fourth period. Penn State-Behrend tied the score on Pinter's third goal of the game. The Beavers never trailed in the contest until the Nittany Lions final goal. Causgrove's goal with 1:36 left on the clock gave Penn State-Behrend their only lead of the game.
Caltech had an opportunity in the final seconds but Emily Shih's shot from eight yards out was saved by Kara Stegman.
Caltech goalie Connie Hsueh came up with big saves time-and-time again. The junior blocked 17 shots, including numerous one-on-one opportunites, in helping the Beavers stay close through out.
