PASADENA, CA - A second half charge fell just short for Caltech as they dropped a 6-3 decision to Macalester on Friday afternoon.
Connie Hsueh gave a hearty defensive effort to start the game. The junior continued her fine performance in front of the cage by stopping the first six shots she faced, including two one-on-on situation, to keep the the Mighty Macs off the scoreboard for a majority of the first period.
The visitors broke through with 1:13 left in the first frame when Maggie McKenna scored the game's first goal. Macalester found the back of the net twice in the second frame as Chloe Kaulas scored twice and Rachel Harrington- Abrams added another. The visitors went into the halftime break up 4-0.
Souyma Kannan continued her strong scoring way for the Beavers. Just over 24 hours from posting a five-goal effort, the sophomore scored twice in the third period to cut the Caltech deficit in half heading into the final period.
Less than 90 seconds into the final period Kannan scored her third straight goal to make the score 4-3. The score remained the same for almost three minutes until Macalester's Sharah Shoemaker found the back of the net. With 1:01 left Adrienne Burgin scored the game's final goal.
Hsueh put together a career best game by blocking 21 shots.
Kannan's second straight hat trick ups her season total to a Caltech best 14 goals. Shalini Majumdar also continued to be an offensive threat for the Beavers as the sophomore posted a team high six shots.
The contest wrapped-up a six game home stretch to start the season for the Beavers. Caltech will play its second SCIAC game of the season when they travel to Chapman on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
