PASADENA, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2016) – The Caltech men's soccer defense recorded 68 shutout minutes before allowing a lone goal that made all the difference in a SCIAC match against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday afternoon.
In the closest game Caltech has played since winning its last SCIAC point in a 1-1 tie vs. Chapman University in 2014, the Beavers held a strong defensive front, rendering the Sagehens punchless over their nine shots in the first half. The hosts threatened on occasion, but sent a pair of long-range efforts wide and high.
Freshman Kevin Yu (Park Ridge, N.J. / Park Ridge) forced a save from the Sagehens keeper just a minute into the second half, but Pomona-Pitzer steadily gained momentum and finally broke the scoreless tie in the 69th minute. Caltech continued to push forward at points and eventually did put a ball in the back of the net with just over a minute remaining, but the moment was fleeting as the would-be equalizer was called back due to a foul.
Senior J.D. Feist (Richardson, Texas / Jesuit Coll. Prep.) had yet another double-digit save performance, stopping 10 shots on a career-best .909 save percentage.
