LA VERNE, Calif. (Mar. 24, 2016) – Senior Soumya Kannan (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M Gunn) bagged a brace in the Caltech women's water polo team's SCIAC opener at Division III No. 4 University of La Verne on Wednesday afternoon.

La Verne jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter, but Caltech struck first in the second courtesy of senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula).  The Beavers netted another late in the quarter via senior Alexandra Ilic (Austin, Texas / Westlake), but the Leopards increased the margin to eight at 10-2 by halftime.  Kannan scored her first of the game to open the third quarter and added her second midway through the fourth, with junior Mary Boyajian (Sun Valley, Calif. / Village Christian) also scoring before the final whistle in the hosts' 17-5 victory.

Kannan added three drawn exclusions, one assist and one steal while freshman Brittany Percin (Moraga, Calif. / Stanford Online), despite being held scoreless for the first time in her young career, made five steals, drew two exclusions and recorded one field block.

Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers head to DIII No. 7 University of Redlands (3-16, 0-2) on Saturday, Mar. 26.
