Men's Soccer Shows Improvements, Nearly Beats Redlands

Box Score

PASADENA (Oct. 19, 2019) – The Caltech men's soccer team put forth one of its strongest team showings of the season when it took on visiting University of Redlands for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers, who fell to the Bulldogs 8-0 just two weeks to the day in Redlands, projected the best version of themselves and took the visiting team into deep waters.

The Caltech defense limited Redlands' looks throughout the game, forcing the Bulldogs to create their own opportunities or take lower percentage shots, particularly in the first half. Juniors Andrew Larson (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) and JD Walker (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) led the Beavers' backline in front of sophomore Max Popken (Westport, Conn. / Staples), who made seven saves and looked the part against one of the SCIAC's tougher teams. As a result of the Beavers' strong defensive tactics, both teams went into halftime tied with no goals to show for it.

The men's soccer team came out in the second half looking to set a tone and dictate the offensive pacing. After the Beavers drew a foul just 20 seconds into the second period, senior midfielder Theo Yang (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) perfectly placed a free-kick to classmate Max Shen Molesky (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) who then volleyed the ball to wide-open sophomore Velissarios Christodolou (Athens, Greece / Athens College) for the first goal of the game and season. Caltech went on to hold the lead for nearly 30 minutes before the explosive Redlands offense began to catch up with them. As the Bulldogs' opportunities began to increase going into the 70th minute, they managed to strike twice within a two-minute span to take the lead for good. Caltech would not relent, however, and managed to create one more prime chance in the 87th-minute when freshman defender Josh Finnerty (Walled Lake, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) got a look at a header that went just left of the net.

Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will play their next game on the road when they rematch the University of La Verne on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
