Peng Makes History, Becomes All-Time Scoring Leader

Box Score

PASADENA (Feb. 14, 2020) – Senior Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) of the Caltech women's basketball team cemented her status as one of the program's all-time great players by becoming the all-time scoring leader Saturday against Redlands.

The previous record, held by Stephanie Wong '16, stood for four seasons at 1,333 points. Peng broke the record on a tricky jumper in the paint, which put her at 1,334 on her career. The senior finished the game with 16 points, giving her 1,340 career points with two games left on the schedule. This season has been among Peng's best, as she is averaging 18.4 points per game as well as 2.4 field goals per game and 3.5 free throws per game, all career-best marks. She will also go down as the all-time program leader in made field goals, an achievement less common for players of her position.

"It's very exciting and I'm glad I got there with this special group of people," Peng said. "I'm just really thankful for the endless trust and support all my coaches and teammates gave me over the last four years. They helped make it happen."

Peng also went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and each of her first six points came from free throws. She managed to get her teammates involved along the way and finished the game with four assists. Defensively, the senior was as good as ever and accounted for both of her team's blocks. Her second rejection came on a Bulldogs shot in the final seconds of the third quarter, sparking a loud reaction from the fans in attendance. Additionally, Peng's offensive capabilities allowed the Beavers to put runs together against a Redlands team not lacking in depth, size or ability.

"I'm so proud of Grace for breaking such a monumental record," Head Coach Bridgette Reyes said. "It's a testament to the hard work and dedication she brings to our program every day. She is a special player and it is a privilege to coach her."

Other standouts for the Beavers included senior forward Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon), who picked up her 10th double-double of the season thanks to 15-point, 11-rebounds performance. Meanwhile, freshman guard Helen Siavelis (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Prospect) reached double-figures for the second time this year, scoring 10 points and hitting a pair of three-pointers.

Reyes and the Beavers have hit the home stretch. Their next game will come on the road at California Lutheran University this Wednesday, Feb. 19.
