Box Score PASADENA (Mar. 11, 2020) – The Caltech women's water polo team played its best game of the season on Tuesday against Penn State University, Behrend.
The Beavers, led by sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley), handled the Lions particularly well in the second half, holding them to just four goals over the final 16 minutes. The defense in front did well with trapping the Lions into making mistakes and taking tough shots, and Rock responded with a career-high 14 saves.
Offensively, the Beavers picked up their first first-quarter goal of the year and subsequently added two more. However, Caltech managed to whittle an eight-goal differential heading into the fourth quarter down to three thanks to six tallies over the final eight minutes. Sophomore Yuying Lin (Scarborough, Ontario / Victoria Park C.I.), Caltech's leading point-getter on the night, scored three goals and three assists while developing a rapport with senior Mackenzie Wooten (Las Vegas, Nev. / Northwest Career and Technical Academy). Together, the duo scored or assisted on three consecutive goals, with Wooten assisting on two of Lin's successful strikes and Lin assisting on the very next goal with a pass to Wooten. Freshman Amanda Piyapanee (Southlake, Texas / Carroll), meanwhile broke out with four goals and one assist, while Wooten picked up three goals and three assists and sophomore Sophie Devoe (La Jolla, Calif. / Bishop's) picked up her first two assists of the season. One of Piyapanee's goals, scored with five seconds to go in the first quarter, came from just within the center of the pool.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will resume SCIAC play on Wednesday, Mar. 11 against California Lutheran University at 7 p.m.
