CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2021) – Caltech men's soccer faced the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens in a Saturday morning SCIAC matchup, though could muster just three shots on goal after a pair of early strikes staked the hosts to an insurmountable lead.
Facing an onslaught of offense from the home side, the Beavers kept pace in the opening half as each team fired five shots and earned a pair of corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. It was a physical affair like many matches this sesaon, but the officials called a reasonably close 15 fouls on Caltech to Pomona-Pitzer's 12.
Senior Velissarios Christodolou (Athens, Greece / Athens College) played skillfully in the midfield, nearly putting his team on the board with a header shot on goal in the 44th minute. Freshman forward Andy Dimnaku (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) also tested the Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper with a pair of shots while junior defender Travis Xiang (Sanford, Fla. / Seminole) forced a save out of the home keeper as well with the first shot on goal for either team in the second half.
Head Coach Duncan Gillis and the Beavers return home on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. to host the Kingsmen of California Lutheran University.
