Ing Shines Against Dominant Redlands

Box Score

REDLANDS, Calif. (Sept. 18 2021) – Sophomore Derek Ing (Hong Kong / Hong Kong International School) impressed yet again as he challenged a very strong University of Redlands men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, making five saves over 70 minutes of action.

The Bulldogs pressured Caltech relentlessly on their home field, ripping 28 shots as they looked to take every opportunity they had even glancing the goal. The barrage led to five scores hitting the back of the net, though Ing surrendered just two goals (and a third own goal that opened the game) on a respectable .714 save percentage made all the more impressive with the constant onslaught forcing him to be far more active than a typical keeper.

Caltech's defense did well to redirect the numerous Bulldogs attacks in giving up only 11 shots on goal while also facing 11 corner kicks. The Beavers offense struggled to build up an attack through much of the game but did manage to win a pair of corners in the second half and tallied a shot on goal at the 85th minute, courtesy of junior Travis Xiang (Sanford, Fla. / Seminole).

Head Coach Duncan Gillis and the Beavers will return to Pasadena for a pair of home SCIAC contests, the first of which is set for Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. vs. Pomona-Pitzer Colleges – against which Caltech took four points in 2019 with a win and tie.
